By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association

August 31, 2011-Soccer players in youth leagues up to and including theUnder-12 age group play with a size 4 ball. As the kids become teenagers, Under-13 games and older use a size 5 ball.

Yet the average girl does not grow to be nearly as tall or weigh as much as the average boy so is using a size 5 ball appropriate for girl’s and women’s games? That’s what a group in Denmark pondered and in 2008, the Danish Football Association gave permission to experiment with a size 4.5 ball (26.37" circumference) in Girls-Under-18 and women’s games.

Now that experiment has come to these shores as the Westchester Youth Soccer League (WYSL) of the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association has been experimenting with a size 4.5 ball, dubbed the Sensational Soccer Ball, for girls players who have been using the 4 ball as they are graduating to the 5 ball as Under-13 players. A WYSL player originally from Denmark and living in Edgemont went back to Denmark, found out about the Sensational Soccer Ball and brought one back. The WYSL eventually purchased 300 balls.

"We had a Girls-Under-13 scrimmage game between the ODP team and the WYSL Select Team," commented WYSL President Julian DiDonato. "The game was a different game using the 4.5 ball. The game sped up and the ball was kicked further. It was girls soccer on steroids."

"But we asked the players after the scrimmage how they felt about the ball and most hated it as it felt different than playing with the 5 ball to them.So rather than taking a 5 ball away from players, we decided to experiment in practices and friendly games with the 4.5 ball as girls go from the 4 ball to the 5 ball," continued Mr. DiDonato.

In a small survey of 30 female soccer players conducted by the University of Koblenz-Landau in Germany, the poll found that 80% of those surveyed fund the Sensational Soccer Ball to be better to the Jabulani, the ball used in the 2010 men’s World Cup in South Africa. Only 17% found the Sensational Soccer Ball to be "a bit worse" and nobody found it "worse" or "much worse."

47% felt like better soccer players when using the Sensational Soccer Ball, 33% did not know and 20% disagreed. 66% thought it was more fun to play with the Sensational Soccer Ball, 27% did not know and only 7% disagreed. 60% wanted to continue using the Sensational Soccer Ball, 33% did not know and 7% wanted to go back to the Jabulani.

There is a question if the Sensational Soccer Ball can cut down on the rash of knee injuries of teenage girls and women soccer players.

"There are probably a multitude of reasons why girls have issues with meniscus tears and torn ACLs," Mr. DiDonato added. "Many knee injuries have occurred toward the end of soccer games, when players are fatigued. He can comprehend certain tactics by studying the game. But how far he goes will be determined mainly by how well he has mastered ball skills. Those are acquired by playing, day after day, year after year.

A player who really wants to excel will spend as much time as possible playing small-sided games when he has playmates, and juggling and kicking against the wall when he's on his own.

I spent a lot of time hitting the ball against the side of the house when I was a growing up. If my mother complained about the noise, I'd hop down the retaining wall at the end of our property to the office-building parking lot.

I'd use that wall -- hitting the ball with both feet, seeing how long I could return the wall's passes without losing control. I found out later that so many pros spent lots of their childhood doing that.

Dennis Bergkamp, the great Dutch striker who scored and set up hundreds of goals for Ajax Amsterdam, Arsenal, and the Dutch national team, said that when he was a youth player at Ajax, they had little three-foot-high walls. He would knock the ball against the walls for hours. Every time he hit the ball, he'd know whether it was a good touch or a bad touch. He'd do it over and over, trying to establish a rhythm.

Whenever I saw Bergkamp slotting a perfectly placed ball past a goalkeeper or making a precise pass, I thought of him practicing against the wall.

Kicking against the wall is an excellent way to work on improving your weaker foot. You can back up and practice shots on goal, or move close to the wall and work on passing, because where there's a wall, there's a teammate.

You can practice trapping and work on your first touch by controlling the ball before you kick it, or hit it back first time.

Passing the ball against a wall from close distance takes timing and coordination. Hit the ball faster, and you've got to react faster and get a rhythm going. It almost feels like you're dancing.

Practicing the correct striking of the ball over and over helps it become second nature. It has to be, because in a game a player doesn't have time to think about his form or approach. Under pressure, everything is more difficult. Mastering technique while playing on your own is the first step to being able to do it right in a game.

(Excerpted from "More Than Goals: The Journey from Backyard Games to World Cup Competition" by Claudio Reyna, courtesy of Human Kinetics.)

(Claudio Reyna was named the U.S. Soccer Federations's Youth Technical Director in April 2010. Are you seeing a lot of kids specializing in one sport at an early age? If so, has this been increasing, decreasing or stayed about the same over the past few years?

JC: Yes there are children being asked to specialize in one sport and even one position early in their careers. My educated estimation is that the number of kids specializing early has increased over the last five years as participation in youth sports has increased over that time.

2. If you are seeing this trend, why do you think it is happening?

JC: The trend occurs because parents and/or coaches believe it will accelerate the youngster’s development. They use examples from individual sports such as golf or gymnastics where early specialization can be appropriate and they apply that model to team sports. All team sports are classified as long-term development sports, so children should not specialize in only one sport until perhaps the late teenage years.

3. What do you consider to be the pros and cons of early specialization in sports?

JC: I cannot think of any pros to early specialization. The cons include poor athletic development, over-use injuries, emotional exhaustion and psychosocial burn-out. The too much-too soon syndrome also causes a jaded attitude toward the sport to develop by the mid to late teens.

4. At what age is specialization a good thing?

JC: Sports specialize too early in an attempt to attract and retain participants. 17-years-old and beyond is appropriate for specialization in a single sport. For soccer, position versatility is still important even at this age and especially for field players.

5. Can you provide some common sense recommendations to parents (and kids) who may believe that by focusing on one sport at a young age they will get college scholarships or become professional athletes?

JC: Approximately 2% of youth soccer players will earn a college scholarship to play soccer. Let your child play soccer to his or her content without an expectation for the big payoff of an athletic scholarship – there’s much more money available for academic scholarships than athletic ones.

In conclusion, sports can be classified as either early or late specialization. Early specialization sports include artistic and acrobatic sports such as gymnastics, diving, and figure skating. These differ from late specialization sports in that very complex skills are learned before maturation since they cannot be fully mastered if taught after maturation.

Most other sports are late specialization sports. However, all sports should be individually analyzed using international and national normative data to decide whether they are early or late specialization. If physical literacy is acquired before maturation, athletes can select a late specialization sport when they are between the ages of 12 and 15 and have the potential to rise to international stardom in that sport.

Specializing before the age of 10 in late specialization sports contributes to:

• One-sided, sport-specific preparation

• Lack of ABC’s, the basic movement and sports skills

• Overuse injuries

• Early burnout

• Early retirement from training and competition

For late specialization sports, specialization before age 10 is not recommended since it contributes to early burnout, dropout and retirement from training and competition (Harsanyi, 1985).

As the economy slides into a pretty severe recession, it is clear that a number of families face financial challenges that were not present over the past several years. In order to help keep soccer available for the kids in our communities, the WYSL has asked its club leaders and coaches to offer suggestions on how to keep soccer affordable during tough economic times.
