Concussions in youth sports can be a life altering. Their occurrence and damaging consequences to the health and long term wellbeing of your son and daughter are now just becoming fully understood.
Proper precautions, concussion awareness and response are essential safe guards that all coaches, parents, guardians and youth athletes should be practicing. Concussions are serious and most concussions occur without loss of consciousness. Recognition and proper response to concussions when they first occur can help prevent further injury or even death.
It is because of these facts, as an important first step the WYSL and member clubs are strongly urging that you have your son or daughter take a 15-20 minute online baseline test. The baseline testing assesses key areas of brain function including; memory, speed of information processing, and reaction time, and is a very valuable tool for trained medical professionals to use to better evaluate and treat a brain injury in the event of a concussion.
The decision to participate is up to each parent/guardian. The WYSL strongly supports and believes in the benefits of having all children participating in youth sports having a baseline test assessment.
Thank You,
